Sainsburys: Strategies for Customer Retention
Sainsburys: Strategies for Customer Retention Part (1) Unique My examination paper essentially tries to comprehend the needs of client in Sainsbury of choice of items while shopping. Furthermore, Sainsburys endeavors to chip away at their new items with upkeep of their group and sensible incentive to give best administrations to their unwavering clients. My exploration additionally looks to feature the purchaser conduct which makes them to continue visiting Sainsburys. UK retail showcase is the best case of serious market. Examination need to comprehend the item class which prompts nature of item and order of items, furthermore the item esteem which shows valuing with various viewpoints in the UK showcase and extraordinarily in Sainsburys. Furthermore, I am additionally going to investigate about the disappointment systems of the Sainsburys. I will lead this exploration by the balanced meeting with the ranking director of Sainsburys just as there would be a profound examination which will be taken out from the survey with the client of Sainsburys. Essentially the meeting will give me the fundamental line of activity of the showcasing procedure of the new result of Sainsburys and furthermore it will distinguish the various items class and with their various qualities. Poll from the client will feature the necessities and essential subject of the customer that what they think, what they plan and how they pick. I will likewise talk about the most recent two years of the Sainsburys advances about the items in light of the fact that in recent year Sainsbury has improved their exercises under the new administration. Presentation Joined Kingdom is one of the most quickly developing markets in quick moving customer products on the planet. Market openings are nearly superior to different nations. Assets and legitimate GOVT. arrangements are useful for the new contestants in the retail advertise despite the fact that the UK 500 retailers are getting a charge out of around 85 percent of the entire market and rest of 215000 retailers are battling for residual pieces of the pie. Furthermore, this pattern or market rivalry empowers or powers the retailers to concentrate just the client needs. This pattern offers the chance to huge retailers to make the enormous general stores. That all the quick moving items incorporate food and early afternoon food thing, home apparatuses and considerably more under a similar rooftop to satisfy the client needs and these grocery stores demonstrated more accommodation for the buyers. In mid 19 century in UK, the retail advertise had diverse shape which calls co-employable development where the different retailer or gathering of retailers goes under one administration for cooperating to offer their items in reason capable cost to their clients. This pattern of co-employable development began in UK by Rochdale, Lancashire in 1840 and later in north of Englands retailers. In any case, this combining was uniquely for the clients who bought the items in mass. After Second World War when the economy of United Kingdom was revamping, that was the ideal time for the financial specialists to put resources into the various fields of business and retailers additionally made their positions. Like following multi year of war end Marks Spencer opened their first general store in 1948 then Sainsburys opened in 1950, Tesco opened their first self assistance store in 1954, Morison opened 1958 and ASDA opened first market in 1963. The period of 1960, 70s, 80s was the hour of extens ion of these goliaths who later opened their market with various sizes in everywhere throughout the spots in UK, made their stores more comfort and gave increasingly solid administrations to their clients. In todays quick paced life no one has the opportunity to go at singular shops for all the family unit needs and general stores has satisfied this lack by giving their objective market all the items i.e., from staple to individual consideration, and from kids things to medications and hardware, furniture, new things, meat, and so forth and so forth. The accessibility of every one of these things under one rooftop has different attractions which urge a client to visit in general stores. (www.tescopoly.org) (Raphael Moreau: franchiseek.com) General stores have one significant preferred position that client come intellectually arranged to make overwhelming shopping i.e., at any rate the supply of multi week family unit things with the goal that he/she don't need to come back over and over for little things. As London is one of most populated city on the planet and everyday costs should be made by everybody, along these lines grocery stores can make huge volume of deals. Because of enormous size of buying stores can make various offers particularly on the every now and again moving things like tidbits, cheddar, drinks, chocolates, pastry shop things, lagers, wine, vegetables, organic products, meat, and so on and so forth. Along these lines customers are enticed to make constrained selling. Because of huge deals volume the selling costs goes down which thus upgrades the benefits of the stores. (Grahame Dowling: Buying Behavior) Toward the beginning of 2007 the UK retail advertise was worth about 128.2 billion with the thorough increment of 4 percent after 2006. End of 2007 that was accounted for that there are around 99, 134 retail locations in the United Kingdom which contain the little stores like Spar or Londies and furthermore incorporate the markets like Tesco, Sainsbury and so on. These all stores, food merchants and general stores are growing their organizations broadly as their objective market is extending which made the UK showcase best case of flawless serious market. (www.igd.com) UK retail Market Growth UK Grocery Market Performance (Source: IGD Research 2007) As talked about the grocery stores and various retailers it shows that the clients of UK have wide scope of choice of choice. So as to assess the client determination of item is the firm it ought to for the most part allude to the conventional types of advertising as they can be seen in many organizations globally. In this unique circumstance, the investigation of Aufreiter et al. (2000) indicated that when conventional advertisers consider association, they mean structure: particular item, channel, and client bunches concentrating on explicit practical undertakings, for example, brand separation, client section the executives, and statistical surveying while useful chiefs assume the urgent jobs in these practically engaged client gatherings, which are liable for producing thoughts and taking them to showcase. (Aufreiter, N., Lawyer, T., Lun, C. (2000) It might be said, client choice of item is figured for each situation as per the requirements of the specific organization however above all with the states of the market. The term of centering the item is regularly utilized for this situation to show the inclusion of business visionary in the plan and the application procedure of the consumer loyalty of explicit item and the principle focuses of the advertising arrangements utilized by a particular association. In this specific circumstance, Welsh (2003) upheld that this term can be characterized as ââ¬Å"the proactive ID and abuse of chances for pulling in and holding clients through imaginative ways to deal with hazard the board, asset utilizing and esteem creationâ⬠(Welsh, 2003, 5). Then again, it is vital that organizations universally utilize the suitable methods of correspondence as per the social and social states of the market in question. With respect to issue, the investigation of Dobie et al. (2003) indicated that ââ¬Å"marketing interchanges are a significant component of any item as it is fundamental to advise potential and existing clients with respect to item/administration accessibility and application, and to convince expected clients to research, analyze, as well as attempt the proffered item/serviceâ⬠. (Dobie, K., Grant, J., Megehee, C. (2003). In the wake of looking into the changed perspectives on client determination one could without much of a stretch inform that in UK where around 10 percent of the entire nation isn't local can be an entangled market where the item choice can be unique and these individuals need to cover by stores to pull in them by their local items with concern food and staple items. Furthermore, this target drives them to make new product offerings in their stores. As I referenced about the pattern of market in the UK and further on the three top grocery stores are following: Tesco ASDA Sainsburys This is the ongoing examination that Tesco has 31.5 percent of entire UK retail piece of the overall industry further on ASDA who has 16.7 percent just as Sainsbury who secured the 16.3 percent piece of the pie. In 1980s and mid 90s Sainsbury had the initiative of UK showcase how ever in 1995 Tesco leads with 17 percent piece of the pie with quickly expanding following years. In any case, from recent years when the Sainsbury goes under new administration with Justin King they expanded well and fortune is this that could contend their adversary ASDA and could recover on number two situation in UK retail advertise. Sainsburys the executives is currently improving under the new administrative structure and presenting the wide scope of creation their stores with various class and worth. They expanded their natural range and new lines of something new which likewise incorporate the food things which concern their different nations clients who are living in UK. (news.bbc.co.uk) In 2005 Sainsbury additionally changed their motto ââ¬Å"try something new todayâ⬠to present their wide scope of new items to their dedicated clients. As the Sainsbury is the UK third biggest general store has expanded its like to like deal from most recent two years. Furthermore, this strategy urges them to convey huge number of items in their stores which is a test and in the event that they cannot do so they can bring down their development rate according to their different rivals who are expanding essentially. Sainsbury likewise expanded their non food items in the stores. They need to engage their client with their new product offering including food and non food items. In any case, the test is if their different opponents like ASDA and Tesco dont slant down their non food items offers it very well may be a

Chromium Induced Toxicity Research
Chromium Induced Toxicity Research Unique In the current examination, we speculate that cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and oxidative pressure assume a key job in chromium prompted poisonousness in SISS, SISK, IEE, IEK, IEG, SICH and ICG cell lines when uncovered for 24 h. Intense harmfulness tests were led on three fish species to be specific L. calcarifer, E. suratensis and C. catla by presenting them to various focus (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg/L) of chromium for 96 h under static conditions and the LC50 was determined. The rate cell endurance was evaluated by numerous endpoints, for example, MTT, NR, AB and CB examines were acted in seven fish cell lines presented to various groupings of chromium and EC50 estimations of all the four endpoints was determined. Straight connections between's each in vitro cytotoxicity examine and the in vivo mortality information were exceptionally noteworthy. Minute assessment of cell morphology demonstrated cell shrinkage, cell separation, vacuolations and cell growing at most noteworthy grou ping of chromium (50mg/L). The DNA harm and atomic fracture were surveyed by comet measure and Hoechst recoloring, in seven fish lines presented to various groupings of chromium. The consequence of cancer prevention agent parameter got show fundamentally diminished catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GSH) and Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and expanded degree of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in all the cell lines after introduction to expanding chromium in a focus subordinate way. This outcomes demonstrates that fish cell lines could be utilized as an option in contrast to entire fish utilizing cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and oxidative pressure evaluation after presentation to chromium. Catchphrases: Fish cell lines, Chromium, Cytotoxicity, Genotoxicity, Oxidative pressure 1. Presentation Substantial metal contamination of water is a genuine natural issue confronting the advanced world. At worldwide level overwhelming metals contamination is expanding in nature because of increment in number of ventures (Chidambaram et al. 2009). Modern effluents are released into the sewage channels, streams and water system water, causing significant contamination and wellbeing perils (Baddesha and Rao 1986). Numerous modern wastewaters contain substantial metals like cadmium, lead, zinc, cobalt and chromium. The poisonous substantial metals are generally ingested and get gathered in different plant parts as free metals which may unfavorably influence the plant development and digestion (Barman and Lal 1994). Individuals and dairy cattle are gravely influenced when these metals are consolidated into natural pecking order as it causes bronchitis and malignant growth (Khasim et al. 1989; McGrath and Smith 1990; Nath et al. 2005). Among overwhelming metals, chromium assumes a significa nt job in contaminating our amphibian condition framework. In nature chromium happens predominately in two valances Cr (III) and Cr (VI). Hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] prevails over the Cr (III) structure in common waters. Hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] particulates enter the amphibian medium through effluents released from calfskin tanning, materials, chrome electroplating, metal getting done with, coloring and printing ventures and a few different businesses. The Cr (VI) infiltrates natural layers effectively and causes cell harm by oxidative pressure (Irwin et al. 1997; Begum et al. 2006), its unselective introduction may present genuine impact on amphibian networks including fish. Harmful impacts of Cr(VI) on enzymological/biochemical (Al-Akel and Shamsi 1996; Vutukuru et al. 2007; Oner et al. 2008), hematological (Gautam and Gupta 1989; Al-Akel and Shamsi 1996), immunological (Prabakaran et al. 2007) parameters, endocrine harmfulness (Mishra and Mohanty 2009) and genotoxicity (Chen et al. 2011) have been accounted for in numerous teleosts angles. In natural hazard evaluation, a great part of the harmfulness test on fish has included the utilization of lethality as the endpoint. Then again, in vivo bioassay is costly and requires colossal amount of toxicant. The presentation time is just 24 h as contradicted 96 h in bioassay, which could lessen the expense of work, lab offices and test time however more significantly permit choices to be made all the more quickly. By and by, harmfulness testing with fish is a fundamental piece of ecological hazard appraisal techniques (Castano et al. 2003). For every one of these contemplations, the turn of events and utilization of in vitro tests that could quantify beginning times of poisonousness in vertebrates speak to a methodology that could be valuable to checking natural hazard evaluation (Walker 1999). In the course of the most recent four decades, cell and tissue culture strategies have been refined and have now become a basic device in ecological research. There are a great deal of moral, logical and prudent reasons that help the improvement of in vitro strategies for use in ecotoxicology (Castano and Gomez-Lechon 2005; Bols et al. 2005; Schirmer, 2006; Fent 2007; Taju et al. 2012, 2013, 2014). The utilization of fish cell lines in natural toxicology has been evaluated and emphatically surveyed chiefly concerning cytotoxicity (Babich and Borenfreund 1991; Castano et al. 2003; Fent 2001). Cytotoxicity appraisals can be promptly utilized to look at numerous endpoints, including estimations of cell demise (apoptosis), cell feasibility, cell morphology, cell digestion, cell connection/separation, cell layer porousness, multiplication, development energy, genotoxicity and oxidative pressure (Maracine and Segner 1998; Li and Zhang 2002; Shuilleabhain et al. 2004; Taju et al. 2014). In the current examination, three fish species from three diverse oceanic conditions, Lates calcarifer (Marine), Etroplus suratensis (Brackishwater) and catla (freshwater) were chosen as delegates of their individual surroundings to read their reasonableness for intense poisonousness test to assess the potential danger of chromium (Cr). They are incredible food angles with a decent market request in India, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. A few endeavors were made to concentrate in vivo intense harmfulness in Sea bass, Etroplus and Catla utilizing different toxicants (Chezhian et al. 2010; Azmat and Javed 2011, 2012; Bhat et al. 2012; Taju et al. 2012, 2013). The seven fish cell lines to be specific SISK and SISS cell lines got from L. calcarifer (Sahul Hameed et al. 2006; Parameshwaran et al. 2006b), SICH and ICG cell lines got from C. catla (Ishaq Ahmed et al. 2009b; Taju et al. 2014), and IEE, IEK and IEG cell lines got from E. suratensis (Sarath Babu et al. 2012) were utilized as in vitro measures to assess the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and oxidative pressure presented to chromium. The consequences of in vitro cytotoxicity were contrasted and the aftereffects of in vivo intense harmfulness test utilizing fish. The utilization of these cell lines for harmfulness appraisal of chromium as opposed to living fish is suggested. 2. Material and techniques 2.1. Synthetic substances and reagents Tissue culture media and synthetic substances were gotten from GIBCO (Invitrogen Corporation, USA). Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7), EDTA, Trichloroacetic corrosive, DTNB [5,5-dithio-bis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid)], Thiobarbituric corrosive, Hydrogen peroxide, Nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT), Riboflavin, Hydroxylamine-HCl, Triton X-100, Ethidium bromide, Methanol, Acetic corrosive, Sodium chloride, Sodium hydroxide and Coomassie Blue was bought from SRL synthetic concoctions, India. 2.2. Assortment of trial creatures Lates calcarifer and Etroplus suratensis were gathered from Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai. Catla was gathered from a neighborhood lake in Walajapet, Vellore District, Tamil Nadu, India. The exploratory fishes were 2 3 g in body weight. Examples were shipped live in oxygen sacks or containers to the research center, acclimatized and kept up for 20-30 days in a saltiness scope of 5-10 ppt for E. suratensis, 20-25 ppt for L. calcarifer and in freshwater on account of C. catla (23-28oC) under an encompassing photoperiod in the research center for 10 days preceding trials. The fish were taken care of with business pellet feed two times per day and starved for 24 h previously and during the examinations. 2.3. In vivo fish intense harmfulness test Fish intense harmfulness tests were led by uncovering E. suratensis, L. calcarifer and C. catla (N = 10 for each aquarium) for 96 h to chromium under static conditions (OECD 203, 1992). Five unique focuses chromium i.e., 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg/L weakened with seawater (5 ppt) and freshwater while control with ocean water and freshwater alone were tried to decide the LC50 (fixation at which half of the fish populace kicks the bucket). The aquaria had a working volume of 30 lit dependent on the body weight of fishes (1 g fish/L). Dead fishes were tallied and evacuated promptly consistently. All the tests were led in triplicates. Mortalities were recorded after the rule for fish intense harmfulness OECD 203 (1992). 2.4. Fish Cell lines An aggregate of seven cell lines built up from various organs of L. calcarifer (SISS-seabass spleen, SISK-kidney), E. suratensis (IEE Etroplus eye, IEG gill, IEK kidney) and C. catla (SICH Catla heart, ICG gill) were tried for their sensitivities to chromium. These fish cell lines were engendered at 28oC in Leibovitzs L-15 medium (pH 7.0 - 7.4) with 2mM L-glutamine, 10% fetal ox-like serum (FBS), penicillin 100 IU/ml and streptomycin 100 Ãââ µg/ml. The osmolarity ran from 300 to 360 mOsm kg-1. These cells were sub-refined each 2-3 days utilizing standard strategy. Cells at exponential development stage were collected and utilized for in vitro cytotoxicity tests. 2.5. In vitro cytotoxicity test utilizing fish-inferred cell lines SISS, SISK, IEE, IEK, IEG, SICH and ICG cells at exponential development stage were gathered and weakened to a convergence of 105 cells/ml in Leibovitzs L-15 medium with 10% FBS. After disturbance, the cells were added to each well of 96-well tissue culture plates at the grouping of 2 x 104/well and brooded for the time being at 28oC. After brooding, the medium was evacuated and the cells were re-taken care of with medium c

The Role of Research and Statistics in the Field of Psychology Abstract Research and statistics are essential elements within the field of Psychology. Through the evolution of technology, the task of conducting adequate research and statistics methods have become abundant in methodology. Because of such, research collection and experimentation approaches of researchers and Psychologists, greatly vary in specificity. This method is an investigation in which a problem is initially identified. With this, observations, experiments, and other relevant data (provided by research) are then used to create or test hypotheses that lead to conclusions about the original problem. The steps involved in this process include: 1) Forming a testable hypothesis. 2) Devising a research plan and method of application. 3) Collecting data and researching. 4) Analyzing the data and reaching possible conclusions about the study. 5) Report findings. This research can be characterized as an activity of creative work that is carried out in a systematic way in an effort to increase knowledge and truth. In the field of psychology, this refers to the knowledge of the human mind, human behavior, cultures, and societies. In order to fully understand how researchers, scientists, psychologists, scholars, and students alike reach such conclusions, one needs to recognize the impor tance of the research process and measures that are applied when conducting the various types of psychological research. Use of Visual Aids by an Autistic Individual
Question: Discuss about theUse of Visual Aids by an Autistic Individual. Answer: Introduction Autism is a mental or behavioural disorder characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people using language and abstract concepts (Autism Spectrum Australia 2016). It is a lifelong condition that affects how a person communicates with people, relates to them and experiences the world (Australia Autism Spectrum 2016). There is no clear cause or cure for autism but its occurrence has been attributed to genetic factors and environmental risk factors such as low supply of oxygen to the child's brain while it was still a foetus and the mother's mental illness during pregnancy (South Western Sydney Institute). The communication in autistic individuals include delay in speech development, difficulty in holding conversations, difficulty in taking part in social interactions and reliance on visual aid and sign language due to inability to communicate verbally (South Western Sydney Institute). It is therefore imperative to use the most appropriate method of communication when interacting with a person with the condition. These methods include; the use of simple and consistent language, use of visual aid, avoiding using metaphors as the individuals interpret language literally, seeking constant confirmation that they understand what you are saying and expressing one idea at a time to allow the person time to process the information and respond (South Western Sydney Institute). The clients unable to communicate verbally rely on visual aid. The use of pictures and symbols eases communication since they are clearly intentional and readily understood. The client, Mark is autistic. He relies on visual aid for communication, routine changes are difficult to him and he is anxious in new situations. The caregiver is required to have the necessary skills to communicate with him, take him through transitions and be able to help him adapt to change easily. The change of environment from what Mark is used to is a difficult process and there should be a way to help him through it. The use of visual aid among other strategies can be useful in the process of transition from one activity to another (Autism Speaks2016). An activity schedule helps in smooth transition by increasing predictability (Autism Speaks 2016). Here is a visual schedule covering the activities that Mark will take part in from the time he wakes up to the time the group meeting with the gamers. The visual support is aimed at reducing the confusion that Mark may experience due to unpredictability (Medic8 2016). He does not handle the change of routine well therefore using the visual aid may help him transition smoothly. The schedule above includes the time, people and various activities that Mark will engage in during the day right from when he wakes up to the end of the day when he leaves the group and goes back home. Since Mark experiences anxiety in difficult situations, it is essential to avoid making him deal with sudden change. I will first inform Mark about the new schedule before starting the new routine. This will include an explanation of what activities he should expect in the future and the time durations of every activity using visual aids. There should be progressive visits to the arena of the gaming meeting which will increase with time (South Western Sydney Institute). Getting his opinion on the new routine and making changes will be an important step in gaining his trust and sense of control in the things that matter to him. It shows that he has a say in the decisions made regarding his life since he is an adult. Involvement of his family in the process goes a long way in making the transition smooth. The family is one of the few institutions that an individual is used to hence; involving them in the process brings a sense of familiarity making it easier for the client to adapt. I can involve the parents in the process by having one of them drive Mark to the meeting and attending some of the sessions. The presence of the parent in the makes it easier for Mark to adjust in a situation that would have otherwise been difficult. The other ways of supporting Mark will involve helping him develop his skills, maximize his independence and supporting his rights, welfare and interests (South Western Sydney Institute). Mark's interest in gaming and trains should be encouraged as they will influence his personal development for instance, attending the gaming meetings will improve his social skills and improve his interaction with people. Mark can be assisted in maximizing his independence by allowing him to make choices regarding his life and interests. All these improve the client's personal development in the all aspects. Synthesis on Race and Ethnicity essays
Synthesis on Race and Ethnicity essays With the commencement of the millennium one might think that what is known as the melting pot of the world would interact more smoothly than what is portrayed in the media. We have long lived in a society that is segregated, not because it has gone unopposed, but because no one wants to take on the responsibility of breaking the "Berlin Wall" of segregation. We have, however, come a long way from the kind of segregation that was imparted in our country's fledgling stages, slavery being the number one offense of segregation. A quarter-century ago, race was part of everyday public discourse; today it haunts us quietly, though on occasion - the Rodney King beating or the Simpson trial or Eric McGinnis's death - it erupts with jarring urgency. At these moments of crisis, during these squalls, we flail about, trying to find moral ballast. By then it is usually too late. The lines are drawn. Accusations are hurled across the river like cannon fire. And the cease-fires, when they occur, are just that, cease-fires, temporary and fragile. Even the best of people have already chosen sides (Kotlowitz, 414) To have any race or sect serve another because they believe they are higher and mightier than the other is preposterous. By our own nature we, as a society, strive to dominate others and become the "King of the Hill". This is our major downfall, by doing this we injure our society and the bond that holds this country together. Why does this occur you might ask? That is a question to be answered only by anthropologists and sociologists; for students do not have the time or inclination to sort through behaviorisms and psychological mumbo jumbo. Many of our youth were taught to stay within their own ethnic groups. This mentality is what gave rise to the Klu Klux Klan, the Chinese prisoner camps of World War II, and the ethnically segregated neighborhoods of today. Some are taught to hate other ethnic groups, some have ...

Critically evaluate the effectiveness of the new actors in employment Essay
Critically evaluate the effectiveness of the new actors in employment relations in providing a viable alternative to employee representation - Essay Example They also have been ensuring there is equity among employees and efficiency to show fairness in the running of organisations (Rasmussen, 2005). Some of the old actors in employment relations include national unions especially the labour unions and the state`s government. Due to the failure of effectiveness of these actors, new actors have emerged who are relevant and effectively fight for the employeesââ¬â¢ rights. The new actors include non-union bodies such as; company councils, works councils, consultative councils/committees (CCs), joint consultative committees (JCCs), staff associations and independent organisations such as; NGOs, HR consultancy firms, employment agencies, chaplains, health advisors and trainers, Citizensââ¬â¢ advice bureaus, global union federations, employment arbitrators, grassroots activists, social movements and counsellors. This essay henceforth evaluates the effectiveness of these new actors in employment relations in providing a viable alternative to employee`s representation. The new actors in employment relations are mostly comprised of non-union employee`s representation bodies and some independent organisations all with the aim of fighting for the employee`s rights and interests (ââ¬Å"Employment Relationshipâ⬠, 2011). Non-union bodies refer to those employees who do not belong to any labour unions. They have emerged due to the inadequacy of the labour unions to handle employees grievances effectively and failing to represent them properly. The company councils, works councils, consultative councils/committees (CCs), Joint Consultative Committees (JCCs), staff associations NGOs, consultancy firms, employment arbitrators and activists are some of non-union bodies who have shown interests in the fight for employee rights and interests in their workplaces. These new actors have come up with new ways of handling employee`s grievances and negotiating with their employers to the

Chapter 1 problems Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Chapter 1 problems - Assignment Example However, my utility of attending the game will be higher as compared to that of Joe because I had already paid more to get the best seat. Additionally, if we were to draw an indifference curve, I will be at a higher indifference curve than Joe (Frank & Bernanke, 2013). Therefore, my likelihood of attending the game at Syracuse will also be higher than that of Joe. This is because even if I will be late for the game because of the snowstorm I am assured of the best seat unlike Joe who did not even have a ticket to attend the game. The effects of change in price on quantity of garbage collected may be best explained by taking into consideration the law of demand and supply. This law states that when all other factors are held constant (ceteris Paribas) an increase in price may cause a decrease in quantity demanded (Arnold, 2010). On the contrary, a decrease in price may cause an increase in quantity demanded (Arnold, 2010). Therefore, in this case, the garbage was initially collected at $ 6 irrespective of the quantity causing the resident to supply even more cans of garbage. On the other hand, the change in price tag may have two significant effects on quantity of garbage collected. First the quantity of garbage collected will remain the same per average house hold. This is because for each can of garbage to be collected, residents of my city will be paying $2 per can which sum up to $6 for cans per average household. This means that the price per 3 cans will still be the same as the initial fixed price (Arno ld, 2010). The second effect is that, individual house hold may decide to supply less cans of garbage to minimize cost (Arnold, 2010).This is because consumers are rational which means that they always try to minimize cost and maximize their utility subject to their income constraint (Arnold,

A Prayer for Owen Meany Essay -- English Literature Essays
A Prayer for Owen Meany Not the least of my problems is that I can hardly even imagine what kind of an experience a genuine, self-authenticating religious experience would be. Without somehow destroying me in the process, how could God reveal himself in a way that would leave no room for doubt? If there were no room for doubt, there would be no room for me.- Frederick Buechner In the novel, A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving, Owen Meanyââ¬â¢s belief of predestination makes a significant impact on John Wheelwrightââ¬â¢s emotional stability as an adult. John Wheelwright is unhealthily bitter and angry about his past experiences because he clings to a past that never lets him choose. This bitterness fuels his repugnance towards the United States and the Reagan administration, because he understands that everything is in fact predestined just as Owen Meany had believed and he feels helpless because there is nothing he can do to change the course of events in life. The death and responsibility of Johnââ¬â¢s motherââ¬â¢s death fell into the hands of Owen Meany and John can never accept that it was Owenââ¬â¢s fate to kill Johnââ¬â¢s mother. The Vietnam War was completely out of Johnââ¬â¢s hands to control being a young adult and all, and the fact that eventually the war indirectly took the life of his best friend, for this he feels helpl essly responsible and angry. Into adulthood, John becomes bitter towards the United States and its catastrophic news because he knows it is all destined to happen, and like everything else in his life, he has no control or power to change anything. The death of Johnââ¬â¢s mother, Tabitha Wheelwright, was out of Johnââ¬â¢s control and the job is predestined to be executed by Owen. Her death falls into Owenââ¬â¢s hands because as he believes one night after an atrocious fever, that he had interrupted the Angel of Death. Because of this, the task was then placed on him so that he would be the one to kill Tabitha Wheelwright. In Owenââ¬â¢s opinion, he had INTERUPTED AN ANGEL, he had DISTURBED AN ANGEL AT WORK, he had UPSET THE SCHEME OF THINGS.- The Angel, pg. 102 Owen convinced himself that the reason he was used to kill Johnââ¬â¢s mom is because he is an ââ¬Å"instrument of Godâ⬠and that God had taken away Owenââ¬â¢s hands because he is helplessly under the control of destiny. Tabitha Wheelwright died for a reason, and through God, it was predestined to happen by Ow... ... poem â⬠¦ I know: you believe in God, but I believe in ââ¬ËCrass Casualtyââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬âin chance, in luck. Thatââ¬â¢s what I mean. You see? What good does it do to make whatever decision youââ¬â¢re talking about? What good does courage doââ¬âwhen what happens next is up for grabs?- The Finger, pg. 504 Johnââ¬â¢s confusion in destiny stems from the fact that he believes that anything is possible in life and that it is not one big blueprint of the world. Owen Meany never gave John the chance to decide for himself in what he believed in because Owen disproved Johnââ¬â¢s belief by confirming to John that life is destiny. John Wheelwright in A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving is a depressed and bitter man who leads a solitary life in the confinements of his past because he has been so traumatized by catastrophic events in his life that he cannot bring himself to move forward. He is bitter about the future because he accepts that everything in life is predestined and he feels angry because he has no control of what the future brings. As destiny has it, he has no control over the death of his mother, the indirect death of his best friend caused by the Vietnam War, and the current to future issues facing the world.

A Warm Hug: an Ode to Momââ¬â¢s Home Cooking Essay
There are certain things in life that everybody loves. Whether its money, nice cars, a beautiful home, or a significant other. There is one thing that seems to trump these all and never gets mentioned much. That true love is momââ¬â¢s home cooking. Before you write off my assumption as bland and ridiculous, consider this. Besides the presents, and the family time, what is most peopleââ¬â¢s favorite thing about Christmas? If you say momââ¬â¢s home cooking, well you are right. When you went off to college or just moved out on your own, what was your favorite aspect of coming home? Iââ¬â¢ll bet the farm that it was momââ¬â¢s home cooking. Finally when you were a kid and you had a bad test, or someone picked on you that day, what always seemed to make things better and put a smile on your face? Was it video games? Nope, it was momââ¬â¢s home cooking. To me it is the meaning of everything that is good in life. My mom is such a great cook. Anything you could think of, sheââ¬â¢d make it. I know Iââ¬â¢m biased and all since sheââ¬â¢s my mom, but Iââ¬â¢m not going to be offended if you said your mom was the best cook you know either. This is why we all love momââ¬â¢s home cooking, because we all believe that our momââ¬â¢s home cooking is the best. Itââ¬â¢s that belief and notion that makes it so special. When it comes to cooking, my mom is of a special breed. You have to be when you cook for a family of seven and not have one complaint. One thing that makes her stand is the fact that she has an upright freezer and a deep freeze in the garage devoted just for pies. I loved coming home on weekends with the whole house smelling of bread, apples, cinnamon, and sugar. When mom made pies it was like a family holiday. Everybody would gather in the kitchen and wait for that first pie to come out of the oven. Weââ¬â¢d all fight for that first warm, savory, sweet slice of heaven. Christmas time is always a special time. Family, presents, and of course Christmas cookies. Christmas cookies are another one of my motherââ¬â¢s specialties. She makes cookies from all walks of life. Each one is as good as the other. Nothing puts a smile on my face like a warm, fresh, cookie made by mom. When company would come over, she would set out so many different cookies, youââ¬â¢d think you were at a buffet. Tradition says that when you catch a cold you should get plenty of rest and of course eat some chicken noodle soup. Lots of people will just settle for the canned condensed kind. Not this ill patient. I get to enjoy momââ¬â¢s home cooked chicken noodle soup. Just the thought of savory broth, soft noodles, and big chunks of chicken made me feel better almost immediately. Toucan Sam would have no trouble following his nose to this treasure from mom. The soup tastes so good, you would think it could cure cancer let alone the common cold. Momââ¬â¢s home cooking even teaches life long lessons. It teaches you to share. My friends even appreciate momââ¬â¢s home cooking. Iââ¬â¢ve had many friends over for a bite. They love it so much that there have been many times my friends will come, regardless if Iââ¬â¢m there or not. They just want to eat whatever it is that mom will cook. A couple of my friends have even had my mom cook and bake for them on their wedding days. Momââ¬â¢s home cooking can be fancy. It also can be complicated. But when she perfects the simple dishes is when my heart and my mouth together jump for joy. The dish that makes me jump the most is none other than potato salad. This dish to me is my kryptonite. It brings me to my knees. I could eat my weight in potato salad. The tangy sweet flavor could make a grown man act like a kid again. Momââ¬â¢s potato salad one time even earned her a marriage proposal. A man I used to work with told my mom that if anything every happened, to give him a call and they could work things out. It was all said after he tried her potato salad. People from all around love many different things. The one thing people want the most is to be comfortable. They try to find comfort in many ways. Whether it is a warm hug or a nice soft bed. But no comfort can be complete without some of momââ¬â¢s home cooking.

Overview The Things They Carried by Tim OBrien - 1510 Words
The Things They Carried is a novel written by Vietnam Veteran Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien. The Vietnam War took place between 1955 and 1975. Most of the soldiers fighting were young teenage men around the age of eighteen and nineteen years old. Like Oââ¬â¢Brien many of these young men were pulled away from their families and life to fight a war they didnââ¬â¢t approve of or even know about. This had a strong affect on most of these men and Oââ¬â¢Brien uses different ways to show how the Vietnam War affected them both physically and mentally. In order to display these affects he constantly relates different things in battle to a normal life back at home. Through the use of storytelling, fear, and physical and emotional burdens, Oââ¬â¢Brien creates a certain environmentâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Once reality kicks in that the loved one is actually gone you start to think about all the memories you had with them. You tell multiple stories about the good times you had with them an d in a way thatââ¬â¢s what keeps them alive. Just like Oââ¬â¢Brien states at the end of The Lives of the Dead, the dead live. One of the things all the soldiers can relate to is how fear acted as motivation throughout the war. During a war if you ask a soldier how often they feel fear, most of the time the answer will be almost always. Most of these soldiers knew that they could be shot or blown up at anytime. Oââ¬â¢Brien displays different stories about fear multiple times throughout the book, but he focuses on the fear of shame specifically. This was a powerful motivating factor throughout the war because a lot of them did not want to be portrayed as weak or cowardly. Political Parties And The Democratic Party - 984 Words
When looking at the history of US political parties, and classifying these parties into distinct party systems, five separate periods emerge leading up to the current party system. When classifying these party systems, it is important to look at characteristics such as the number of major parties, how these parties seek to gain support, and how the parties organize themselves. The earliest American parties were relatively centralized organizations that represented elite level concerns. They formed mainly at the national level, with low levels of grassroots connections. The first national party to come to prominence was the Federalist Party, who were opposed by the Democratic-Republican Party. The main cleavage that divided these parties was the degree to which the federal government should be centralize power. With the Federalist Party arguing for a stronger role and the Democratic-Republican Party supporting greater rights for the states. Both the modern day Democrats and Republica ns are the result of a fracturing of the Democratic-Republican Party. Internal conflict caused by the expansion of the country and the issue of slavery caused the party to split and form the Democrats and with the remaining faction joining with the Whig Party to Oppose the Democrats. Further division on slavery caused the Whigs to also fracture, giving rise to the Republican Party, who arose as the anti-slavery faction of the party. During the period following the US Civil war, strong regionalShow MoreRelatedPolitical Parties And The Democratic Party Essay1340 Words à |à 6 PagesIntroduction: Originally political parties were seen as skeptical by our Founding Fathers and therefore opposed. Unethical and ethical issues in the prison system
Introduction Every society usually has criminals or people who go against set rules and regulations. Prisons are mostly put in place so that such people can be confined therein for various reasons.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Unethical and ethical issues in the prison system specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This includes ensuring that inmates get corrected and also to protect the public from their crime. Prisons have been there since time in history. They usually have measures such as high ramparts, dogs and maximum security to prevent inmates from escaping. Prison systems have continued to transform in diverse ways. The operation of prison systems in various nations is usually known to differ in diverse ways. Numerous ethical and unethical issues can be traced in prison systems. This paper looks at these issues in depth. (Akers, 2000) Unethical issues An analysis of prison systems shows that there a re myriad unethical issues that are taking place therein. These issues can be noted among prison warders, prisoners and even the auxiliary staff working in the prisons. It is imperative to look at these issues so that relevant authorities can take corrective measures. (Carroll, 2003) Homosexuality This is one of the unethical practices that are evident in the prison systems. Prisons are usually known to confine offenders in one place. They are never allowed to visit their spouses or families. This leads to a situation where the conjugal rights of prisoners are not met. Research shows that inmates resort to homosexuality within the prisons. This is not a healthy practice as some of them after leaving prison to continue with the vice despite having wives. Through this, many marriages of ex-prisoners are easily broken. It is a very unethical practice since it does not result in a healthy society. Surprisingly, the issue of homosexuality in prisons has existed for quite a long time. Rel evant authorities seem unconcerned about this issue, yet it plays a significant role in eroding moral standards within the society. Furthermore, cases of homosexuality are usually noted to be occurring even between prisoners and prison warders. This puts a question mark on the role of prisons in instilling high moral values among offenders in society. (Carroll, 2003)Advertising Looking for research paper on ethics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Rape This is also another unethical practice within the prison system. Various researchers assert that rape cases in prisons continue to escalate year after year. People with the offense of rape are usually allowed to mingle with the other prisoners. Women are the worst hit in this case. Many women prisoners are often raped but never dare to report to the authorities due to fear. Some men are usually raped by their fellow men. The situation is generally bad for children staying with t heir mothers in prison. Most of the children are usually born within the prisons as their mothers serve their sentence. Rape is highly evident as many inmates seek medical attention when their private parts are damaged due to the force inflicted during the act. The challenge with rape cases in prisons is that the perpetrators are never mentioned. The affected parties fear since they are usually forewarned by rapists on dire repercussions in case they spill the beans. (Paula, 2004) The raped prisoners stay with the pain and never talk to anyone. In the long run, they end up carrying out the same act on other prisoners as a revenge mission. Sometimes they as infected with HIV Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases through rape. This is mostly carried out on younger prisoners who have not stayed within prison premises for a long time. The cycle then continues; this becomes the order of the day. This is quite unethical. (Paula, 2004) Mistreatment of prisonersââ¬â¢ children Some women are usually put in prison when they have babies that cannot be left at home. Sometimes the women never have someone who can take care of these small children. They end up going to prison with their children. Some of them deliver their children while in prison. Research shows that these children usually go through a lot of mistreatment as if they are the ones who committed the crime. The children are typically made to stay in confinement with their mothers. They are not given adequate bedding and sleep on a cold floor in the night. (Sissela, 1995)Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Unethical and ethical issues in the prison system specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The children are never provided with sufficient food or a balanced diet that is necessary for their growth. This is entirely unethical as these children are innocent and do not deserve such mistreatment. Sometimes the children are verbally a bused by prison authorities. They are usually told that they are unruly as their mothers or parents. Some of these children go through sexual abuse while in prison premises. (Paula, 2004) The prison environment is not the best for growing up children as they watch their mothers being mistreated, whipped and verbally abused. They grow up in fear; this affects their self-esteem in the long run. Older children are usually made to do tough chores as if they were criminals. Sometimes the children are typically confined indoors; this leads to emotional abuse. This is an unethical practice that needs to be corrected by relevant authorities. (Paula, 2004) Drug trafficking and abuse It is usually expected that prisons play a significant role in changing offendersââ¬â¢ character; this may still be a mirage. Drug trafficking is mostly known to be thriving within prison systems. In this case, prison warders and authorities are usually noted to be actively involved in the business. In some na tions, prison warders assert that low payment stirs them to be involved in such practices. This does not justify the practice at all. Prisoners are usually known to be actively engaged in drug trafficking practices. They link up with other criminals who are generally not in prisons to carry out the practice. Further analysis shows that some prisoners jailed for other offenses start drug trafficking while in prison. This puts question marks on the role of prisons in shaping the character of offenders. Furthermore, many prisoners still abuse drugs such as cocaine and marijuana. The drugs, they say, are readily available to them. They claim that the drugs help them to forget their problems. This practice is mostly known among prison warders since most of them are suppliers. They only ensure that high-ranking authorities that do not condone corruption do not get to know about the practice. This practice within the prison system is quite unethical. (Akers, 2000) Calls of nature Analysis of prisons across the globe shows that some of them have unethical practices. One such method relates to calls of nature for prisoners. It is clear that every human being has to attend to the call of nature. In some prison systems, prisoners are not provided for toilets and lavatories.Advertising Looking for research paper on ethics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Buckets are usually put in every cell for inmates to use as toilets. This is bearing in mind that the cells usually are crowded. It is expected that any person who wishes to relieve himself will use the bucket in the presence of the other prisoners in the cell. There is no privacy when attending the call of nature. The human waste releases awful smell leading to sicknesses among prisoners. This is a very unethical act no matter the crime one has committed. It infringes against the right to privacy when attending the call of nature. Some of the rooms are littered with human waste making life within the cells unbearable. Death penalty This is also a practice that is common in many prison systems across the globe. Some countries have eliminated the death penalty from their prison system. The death penalty is common for capital offenders such as criminals of robbery with violence and murder among other charges. There are nations where capital offenders are hanged. The death sentence is not ethical. No one has the right to take another personââ¬â¢s life no matter the committed offense. People always need to be given a second chance in life rather than taking away their lives. Some of these people are fathers and mothers that have children looking up to them as parents even if they are criminals. Everyone has the right to life whether he is a criminal or not. If people can be corrected by death, then, in the long run, there might be no more people in society. Research shows that some of the people who go through may be innocent hence killing people who are not criminals. Death penalty in the prison system is quite unethical and should be stopped. Emotional and physical abuse Emotional and physical abuses are usually noted to be quite rampant in prisons. Physical abuse sometimes results in severe health repercussions throughout affected prisonersââ¬â¢ lives. Some prisoners suffer kidney problems due to physical damage while in prison. Other physical injuries ma ke prisoners depend on drugs for the rest of their lives. Some injuries make it hard for affected prisoners to lead healthy lives where they can do physical work. This is not ethical at all. (Sissela, 1995) There are some nations where men are usually hit in their private parts damaging the organs. This leads to a situation where they may never sire any children. This is an act that is highly condemned by governmental and non-governmental organizations. These organizations deal with human rights. The extreme isolation of prisoners is emotional abuse. This leads to depression and suicide in affected parties. Abusive language is common in most prison systems. This leads to low-self esteem among prisoners. As prisoners leave prison grounds, some of them adopt an offensive language towards their friends and family. (Akers, 2000) Escape from prisons This has become very common in the prison system all over the world. This tends to happen even in situations where the prisons are usually g iven maximum security. The analysis shows that prison warders collude with prisoners in implementing the escapes. Prisoners usually pay prison warders money. The prisoners are then allowed to escape. Prison warders usually pretend that they were not aware of the escape. Sometimes bribes are even given to higher authorities in prisons. This is entirely unethical since, in the long- run, crime may never be minimized or eliminated from society. (Garland, 2002) Selling of ammunition The trade in ammunition is quite rampant in prisons. This is usually carried out by both the prisoners and prison authorities. Prisoners are mostly known to link up with other criminals who are not in jail in the selling of ammunition. To make matters worse, this trade is usually facilitated by prison authorities. This beats the logic since prisons are mostly supposed to be a place where offenders go through correction. Corruption is mainly on the increase in prison systems as prison authorities supply and p rocures ammunitions. This is usually an unethical practice that enhances crime instead of alleviating. (Garland, 2002) Ethical issues Training in practical skills Despite the unethical matters mentioned above, there are also ethical practices evident in prison systems. One of the ethical problems notable in prison systems is the training of prisoners with practical skills. This includes skills such as tailoring, art, carpentry, and masonry among others. Prisoners who are usually equipped with such essential skills always use them later on in life. They find more meaning to life since such skills help them to start income-generating projects once they leave prison. Research shows that, through such training, prisons have been producing quality products such as designer outfits and even quality furniture. The training project also tends to help prisoners market the products while still in prison and even after they leave prison. Most offenders assert that lack of income leads them to crime. This venture is usually imperative as it solves this problem by helping prisoners gain skills that help them start income generating projects. This means that they do not resort to crime anymore. This means that moral standards of the society. (Sissela, 1995) Allowing spouses to visit prisoners often Changes have been taking place in the prison system across the globe. One factor that usually has adverse effects on prisoners is the denial of conjugal rights. This leads to homosexuality and rape cases. Authorities in most prison systems usually arrange spouse visits for prisoners. Arrangements are usually put in place such that prisoners have rooms for conjugal rights whenever their spouses visit. This is mostly known to lead to improved moral standards for prisoners. This reduces rape and homosexuality cases within prisons. As spouses and family members visit prisons, they give prisoners moral support. This makes offenders desire to join their families. Prison authorities als o arrange for recreational activities for families to enjoy themselves as they interact with their loved ones in prison. This includes video watching and dances among other activities. (Garland, 2002) Religious teachings This is one of the ethical activities that are common in many prison systems across the globe. Prisoners are mostly taught the word of God that is quite imperative in shaping their character. Research has shown that, through these teachings, some of them change their lifestyle and have a very close relationship with their creator. Governmental and nongovernmental organizations mostly support this venture. Some of them usually assert that they got their spiritual calling while in prison. They even start teaching their fellow inmates on religious doctrine. These teachings help prisoners to know the expectation of their maker and the repercussions of disobeying God. This teaches them how they should live with other people well without hurting them in any way. They lear n the advantages of high moral standards and blessings that accompany such a choice. This quickly leads to reformed people and society with high moral standards. (Albrecht, 1977) Education Education is also another ethical thing that can be noted in prison systems that play a significant role in improving the lives of prisoners. Some prisoners are jailed when they do not have any education. Some of them assert that the lack of schooling influences them to join crime. Many prison systems across the globe have incorporated education to give prisoners a second chance to pursue their education. Prisoners are usually given an opportunity to study while serving their term. They are typically encouraged to pursue an education that is necessary for their success after their prison life. (Carroll, 2003) Many enroll for elementary lessons, high school and college lessons in prison. This is usually free of charge hence motivates many prisoners to join. They pursue elementary, high school and e ven higher education in prison. This is mostly an extremely ethical practice in prison systems. It helps in determining the future of ex-prisoners. The program usually tailored in such a way that, after gaining professional skills, they are generally helped to get employment. This often allows offenders to have a brighter future and leave the life of crime altogether. (Carroll, 2003) Conclusion There are unethical and ethical practices that can be noted in prison systems. Some ethical practices include allowing spouses to visit inmates often and providence of education. Prisoners are also given training in practical skills such as carpentry and given religious teachings that transform their lives. Unethical practices in prison include rape, homosexuality, emotional and physical abuse, the death penalty and escapes from prisons among other issues. These issues need to be corrected if these facilities are to improve the lives of prisoners. References Albrecht, S.
